Session 9: Retouching and Restoration with Masking

Introduction to Retouching and Restoration:
- Understanding the difference between retouching (correcting imperfections) and restoration (repairing old or damaged images).
- Key tools and techniques used for retouching and restoration.
Retouching Tools:
- Clone Stamp Tool: Cloning parts of the image to remove imperfections.
- Healing Brush Tool: Blending imperfections seamlessly into the surrounding area.
- Spot Healing Brush: Automatically blending pixels to fix small imperfections.
- Patch Tool: Selecting and replacing areas of an image with another part.
Working with Masking:
- Introduction to Masks: Non-destructive editing using masks for hiding or revealing parts of an image.
- Layer Masks: Understanding how layer masks work for controlling visibility and making adjustments.
- Using the Brush Tool with Masks: Painting on the mask to reveal or hide parts of an image.
- Refining Masks: Using the Select and Mask option for fine-tuning masks and edge details.
- Feathering and Refining Edges: Making the transition between masked areas smooth.
Restoration Techniques:
- Restoring Old Photographs: Using cloning, healing, and patch tools to repair damaged or torn photographs.
- Removing Noise and Enhancing Detail: Applying filters and sharpening tools to improve image quality.
Practice Activity:
- Retouch a portrait or old photo by removing blemishes and imperfections using the healing brush, clone stamp, and patch tool.
- Use layer masks to adjust areas non-destructively and refine the image using Select and Mask.
